Medicare Supplemental Insurance

Medicare Supplemental insurance (a.k.a., Medigap) is additional insurance you can buy to help you pay for Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs. To be eligible for a Medicare Supplement policy, you must have Medicare Part A (in-patient) and Part B (medical).

No networks or referrals are required for most services, including visits to a specialist. In most cases, you do not have to pay co-pays and deductibles. There are no top-end dollar limits on most services, and you can choose from providers already participating in Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. They offer a “bundled” plan that includes Part A, Part B and, in many cases, Part D — also known as a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans also offer extra benefits, such as dental, vision, hearing, transportation for office visits or even a gym membership.

To be eligible, you must have Parts A and B of Medicare, have residence in the servicing area, and you cannot have end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Part D Prescription Drug Plans

If you are enrolled in Original Medicare or certain Medicare Advantage plans, Part D can assist you with the cost of prescription drugs.

Part D plans are administered by various insurance companies. Although all plans offer benefits that meet minimum federal standards, some have additional benefits. Because formularies, deductibles and your medication needs can change, you can review and change your plan annually.
